Monie Monie, Monie Monie!!

London born , Monie Love now resides in the US, unfortunately for us. Its a shame sister! The early 90s was a good time for female rappers. Leading the way were Salt N Pepa pushin their rhymes over the airwaves and dominating the charts. Monie love came along with her cockney-ish style but didnt reach the same heights. Still, she left us with some decent tunage and so i bring to you 2 nuggets from my vault. Ah the good ol'days!

Turn Around, Bend Over, Close Your Eyes, Keep Quiet Now......

Here cometh some new shit! Echoing from the Chicago town of Illinois. He Say, She Say' are sending us good n dirty vibes that come crashing through our speakerboxes courtesy of Myspace. The anthem that is 'Crash Dummie' spits out at you like a very angry Llama and hits you right in the face. A synth hook that you wont let you go, rides over the Million $ Mano beats while Dreas' vocal drips over you like a tank full of honey. Have i used enough alternative metaphors? Hmmm.... its so good i asked them when and if they were gonna come to London...
No plans yet , but we'd would love to '.....came the digital response. Lets hope they do make it over here.... Giving Pop a run for its money. 'He Say, She Say are exciting and electric.' And they sound nothing like Daft Punk. Mr Kanye west seems to have been so influenced by Daft Punk that he decided to totally rip them off but has come off sounding more like Cher with his tired use of the Speakerbox on his new album. Beware of False Idols!!!

Dirty Son Of A Gun!!!

its been flippin ages since i last done one of these and it was only my recent pang of guilt that forced me to do another post on here, lethargic has become my middle name. So, im here to challenge myself...and give you some delights that have been spinning around speakers the past few months.....

First up... 2 In A Room - Somebody In The House say yeah' (YSI) A frantic, cut, copy and paste style of house with too many samples to mention. House in its early form and 'Oh so fine' to move to. Otherwise 2 In A Room were more succeful with there chart topper 'Wiggle It' . I do own a
7 " copy of it but its at my mums in Nottingham.

Described as Thug House' 'Dances With White Girls' from Brooklyn with his 'Girls Bug' (YSI) out now on Throne Of Blood Records is really getting me worked up. Its got this groove that holds makes me wanna Lick It Up....i mean, its jus too frikkin good.
Chek it!

'Royal Orchestra - Git Da Partee Goin'
is another fine slice of 1990 house. Available on import at the time on Fourth Floor Records. This stuff makes me go all funny. In the same sample heavy
style as '2 In A Room" and 'Royal House' this takes the famous Technotronic 'Pump Up The Jam' as its intro....following with a firm house rhythm that satisfies all that come into contact with it.
Its perfect for that early morning Night Bus journey home. ...

I have actually been quite busy (i tell myself) setting up our NYE Super Hero Party called
'SAVE THE WORLD'. Myself, Jamie D Winter, Heartbreak (LIVE) are comfirmed along with
ISA GT (Girlcore) and Le Greve General , all local produce there from the plentiful east end of london. I'll post the flyer when its done. I cant wait. A full on Super Hero theme party with Kryptonite Dancefloor, complete with Lasers and loads dry ice for that Flying feeling....You'll be able to get tickets at Bar Music Hall on Curtain Road from Dec 1st. It'll be Super!!!!

Back to the music and its time for some dreamy early US house in the shape of a Freddie Mercury sample from 'Bohemian Rhapsody' and 'Theme For Great Cities' producing the
ethereal 'Corporation Of One - The Real Life'. Released in 1988 to undergrounds dirtier dance floors only to be remixed by Dave Lee and Re-released in 2001. The original is still a Joy!!

Im gonna be djin at Popstars this Friday followed by my night WORD at Bar Music Hall with resident original house spinners Jamie D Winter and Prince Nelly. ... followed by a photo shoot on Sunday for Bella Freud. All that and fine tuning the details for NYE should see me right for tings to do. Id rather much go out with the Boys!

last and definately superior in my opinion to all the above. I send this crashing into my concrete
heart and soul, breaking me in pieces with its Crisp Beats that crumble all over the dancefloor and bounce theyre THAT HOT! Its the Diplo Remix of 'Young Mc's - Bust A Move'.
Im loving Diplo for this mix even though im 'ever so more than' a Tad bored of the sound-a-likes in his field. This though Kills it... retaining the original and not fucking it up. Stripping it back , updating the beats for freshness, highlighting the Geeetars and adding some girly sweetness to the Diana Ross sample. A massive fan of the original i give this the HOTTEST ROKK this month.
Try stand still while playing this. I cant!

My fingers are busting. You know trying to write a letter these days is hard work. You ever tried writing a letter recently. Im so used to typing, that my flow while writing with a pen aint what it used to be. oh lordy, it looks like i'll be needing some Fish Oil supplements. Gulp!

Till its time to Rokk again... Get busy!

Dude..

Ed Bangers newest recruit to the somewhat tired French scene, Mickey Moonlight inspires a new direction. And will defo be played out at Electric Picnic when i play there at the end of the month.

'Mickey Moonlight - Interplanetary Music (Riton Remix)

Another great find in my stash that i hadnt listened to in years until the other day was 'old skool' favourite Denis Lopez ' Dont You Wanna Be Mine'. Set for a re-release this year with a tame attempt at updating the original, it could never beat the original C&C Music Factory remix. The 'Rave' version released was a speeded up piano monster but still was shaded by the C&C mix. So, here it is... enjoy

Denise Lopez - Dont You Wanna Be Mine (Original C&C Music factory Vocal Club Mix)

And lastly i had to post up this acid trip of a track from Tom Tom Club. 'Dont Say No' is new to me as this remix is so i dont have much to say other than its possibly the finest 'acid rock dub' i ever heard. Turn it up!

Harpers Love Bizzare

Since arriving Harper has made a lasting impression on many south east of the river. Her debut was met with open arms, a heavy sigh and a cardboard box. Speeding her way like a cat out of hell she arrived at her new pad safely. Camera flashes and drinks all round. Her favourite tipple of Whiskas Milk, on the rocks was much needed and lapped up. Famed for her coat that shines like a full moon in summer, her trademark stripes and spotted stomach she was unexpecting of the adoration from her contempories that gushed with envy as green as the grass in our backyard. And on settling in, she has enthralled us with stories about her travels and filled us with promise about her hopes for the future, that will 'Set the world alight, like never before'.

Ive not seen her for a few days but i have heard that she's already ordered her catnip and is channeling with the tenacity of a praying mantis. Its a good time for all, knowing that she's even in town. For long she has been aloof. For a while distant and occupied with fighting her Poppy garden demons. But on seeing her i know for certain that she never ever, went out of style.

If there is one track that springs to mind when i think of the legendary Harper. One that conjures up images of crazy nights on the tiles, scampering around in bushes with the moonlight as our mistress, armed only with a couple of spliffs and an attitude has to be her best friend Lady Miss Kiers old band 'Deee Lite'. The track is 'Pussycat Meow Deep Remix'. Miss Kier was so enchanted on first meeting Harper that she wrote this song in her honour. They no longer speak but 'Cest La Vie'. Get your catnip at the ready and take a deep breath. Harpers Back and she's here to play.

We bow to you Harper!

WORD?

They keep sayin we gonna have a late summer, that the current downpour is all part of the lead up to glorious sunshine in september but im bored of waiting! The rain has encouraged me to fiddle on my trusty laptop and push out another bootleg though.... Paperclip Peoples (Carl Craig)
track 'Throw' was a firm fav of mine back in 94. The dirty bassline that rolls and rolls gets me everytime and with all things 90s in Vogue i thought id mash it up with the 92' classic DSK 'What would we do' recently sampled on the Wiley track.

So, i doth present 'DSK People - What Would We Throw' (Rokk Pie N Mash Up)

And continuing the 90s theme, get yourself ready for new Rokk venture in the form of a new night for london town, in Shoreditch. It takes off where BUMPPS left off and begins the 2nd Saturday of October. You heard it first here....

NICE

until next time

Tell me bout love

In 1993 i was still living in Nottingham and djing at The Garage, Nero's and a monthly night called Tutti Frutti. None of you will have heard of them unless you lived in Notts but this was when i used to play mostly House. The house music doin the rounds then was 'Proper' it had balls and was FFFFFfresh. David Morales' the gayest looking straight guy on the block was producing as 'The Bad Yard Club' and made the album 'The Program' (The DEF mix of the title track i posted earlier) featured on the album was the ragga pop track 'Gimme Love' the best mix above all being the monster 'Jackie 60 Experience Mix' ... 'feat Donna Giles, the intro is enough to kill me..... It reminds me of going to The Yard in Mansfield, Deluxe in Nottingham and 'Progress' in Derby. This was when Alistair Whitehead and Jeremy Healy were regulars on the scene.

Speaking of Jeremy Healy he's just got engaged to Patsy Kensit, for the second time. A couple of weeks ago i filmed the Trailer Trash Summer Party in the east end of london. A Rave Tent featuring Tomboy, Brodinski, Hannah Holland, Mikki Most, Jonjo and Ian Robinson. Alongside a Disco Tent featuring the Horsemeat Disco crew and Disco Bloodbath. It was A-mazing. I ended up staying in the Disco tent until the end and it was at 6am that Dan Beaumont of Disco Bloodbath played this next track. Originally produced by The Pet Shop Boys , Eighth Wonders 'Im Not Scared' dodgy vocals from Patsy Kensit but the ultimate guilty pleasure. Drag queens lip syncing, Drag queens on the speaker boxes what a way to end the party, genius!

Hit House Attack!!!

I'd been tryin to get Robyn a dj gig at london homo hotspot 'Popstars' for ages but we could never match it with her touring schedule so we tried and tried and eventually locked down a date which was last friday and rokked up! I'd not met Robyn since i interviewed her for F@&K magazine in 2006 so we went for dinner in soho accompanied by her dj mate louise, for a catch up over some tasty Thai. We drank way too much white wine which always sends me loopy lou and made it to the venue intact about 3 hours later. We set up in the dressing room where she played some of her hot tracks, each taking it in turns to listen on the headphones....one of which was 'HIT HOUSE' a guy from Belgium who i remember from the late 80's whos track' Jack To The Sound Of The Underground' id recently been rinsing to death in the clubs as if it were made yesterday. Robyn not only had this track but the whole album, amazing! Ive been on a mission to find it since and guess what, i got it! I couldnt believe she knew of him too, i was astounded.

After this revelation we made our way through the crowds to the sweaty hotbox that was the Pop room at Popstars and headed straight to the Dj booth. Full of sweaty pop lovers with their cameras out ready for Robyn to take control of the decks. Robyn got her Camcorder out as i grabbed the Mic and introduced her to the crowd... 'HIT IT' i screamed.... she dropped 'Eurythmics 'Sweet Dreams' , nuff said.

That night Robyn reminded me of so much music that id forgotten about. Tapping into someone who has a similar infatuation with a similar style/era of music as myself, is a fucking joy! Its a connection that i cherish! So in that same vain, im gonna share a few of the tracks that she inspired me to dig out of my collection.

here goes....

Inner City - Aint Nobody Better

Hithouse - I Felt Acid House Love

David Morales - The Program (Def Mix)

Jungle Brothers - I'll House You

With the above in mind im starting a new night of Hip House, Hit House, Acid and all that early 90s late 80s housey vibe at the Old Bar Music Hall on July 31st called 'BUMMPS'.
Its gonna be a once a month party, so if thats yo thing come and join. We'll have Big FUN!!!

Numero Uno

After much persuasion ive entered into the world of Blog. Its been a manic weekend which began with the Trailertrash Summer Party with Brodinski, Hannah Holland et al in the Rave tent and Horsemeat Disco and Disco Bloodbath on saturday night. I filmed the whole event, say Whole loosely coz things got a little messy towards the end and i ended up freaking out to the disco choons supplied by the loverly Dan Beaumont in the Disco tent. Such fine selections included 'Strings of life, Whitney Houstons' Love Will Save The Day... the closing track being Eighth Wonder/Patsy Kensit 'im not scared' from 1988 a guilty pleasure of the highest degree. The crowd begging for one more were left with this imprinted on their messy minds. Im still getting chills listening to it now.

I recently bootlegged 'love will save the day' with Hercules & Love affairs 'Blind' posted for you here, so enjoy ....

The Whitney Affair - Love Will Save The Blind (Rokk Pie N Mash Up)
